South Sudanese President Salva Kiir’s son, Major General Atem Salva Kiir Mayardit, has assumed command of the elite Republican Guard, commonly known as the Tiger Division, following a military leadership reshuffle announced on September 9, 2026. He replaces Major General Deng Madhang and will also oversee the Special Forces until further notice, according to the South Sudan People’s Defence Forces.
The army said the changes are intended to strengthen coordination and operational effectiveness within key military units. Military spokesperson Colonel Garang Ateny Alier said Atem’s appointment was based on his experience, training and previous leadership of the Special Forces, while dismissing claims that his predecessor was removed over misconduct.
